From the Chief Executive

Kia ora koutou

At last. The day that we have all been waiting for has arrived: our borders are now fully open, including international student visa processing.

Thank you all for your support during the past two+ years. At times, the personal and professional challenges, and the stresses and strains on all of us as individuals and our colleagues, inside and outside New Zealand, and our whānau have been significant. We watched as good people we’ve worked with and had come to know well left the sector.

It was tough!

I want to acknowledge the enormous effort and personal care you provided to support international students who chose to remain here, despite being far away from their homes and families; to support students who were caught overseas to continue their studies online; and to enable students to travel to New Zealand through the cohort processes.

Everything we have done – to support each other, support students, establish new initiatives, sustain and build new relationships in our partner countries, keep the New Zealand brand alive, and much more – all this work means that we are now able to focus on rebuilding the international education sector.

It is important work. You know, as I do, that international education in all forms changes lives.

Rebuilding the sector will not be quick or easy or without new challenges. Equally we can be confident that the resilience we’ve demonstrated over the past two years, together with the expertise and commitment you bring to international education every day, mean that we have what we need to succeed. I look forward to working closely with you in partnership on the rebuild.

Ki te kotahi te kakaho ka whati, Ki te kapuia e kore e whati

Alone we can be broken. Standing together, we are invincible
